28 years of “The Daredevil” | Know the predictions of the future that the cult of action was right

on

It’s nothing new that films that were not appreciated at the time of their release live on to become a cult following in the following years. The Daredevil fits a lot in this regard. Released on October 3, 1993 in the United States, arriving in Brazil on February 4, 1994, the feature film grossed $ 58 million at the box office in its home country, which only equates to its production value. , but its success is reported in the rest of the world. The fact almost took off the role of a sequel to be released at the time, still in the 90s. It never happened, but star Sylvester Stallone piqued the curiosity of his fans by mentioning a possible sequel. late.

In the plot, Stallone sees the hard-line cop John Spartan, a guy who uses unorthodox methods to fight crime. In other words, basically any character of the actor. The novelty here is that they set him up against an equal antagonist, in the form of Wesley Snipes (also riding the crest of the wave at the time), terrorist Simon Phoenix. During a confrontation between the two many innocent people die, and as punishment both are condemned to a new form of prison: cryogenics. The two wake up in the future, in 2032, and are faced with a reality far different from what they used to know.

Daredevil, aside from being a mind-boggling sci-fi action movie, still works heavily on the basis of social criticism, with its very satirical take on the future. The film turns 28 in 2021 and, in addition to the other attractions, served to introduce a large part of the audience to the charm and charisma of Sandra Bullock in one of her first leading roles, a year before his revelation in Maximum Speed. In its predictions which have a certain sourness, The Daredevil hit a lot of things that we would consider a reality in our daily lives, already in the “future” of 2021. And who needs The Simpsons as mediums, right? Come to think of it, this new article introduces some of the more curious things that the feature provided for. Check-out.

A politically correct future

The ’80s were wonderful, but they were also the most politically incorrect decade we could imagine. Part of this culture spread until the 1990s, when the law of the fittest prevailed and the “alpha male” was determined by his victories in physical fights and constant romantic conquests of the opposite sex, for example. It is precisely for this reason that it is curious to see how The Daredevil predicted where our society would go: towards a time that would be the complete opposite – with many deprivations and an experience aimed at kindness, unity and our improvement. human. For many, the so-called “how boring the world is”.

In Daredevil’s future, many (or almost all) of the perfectly normal behaviors of the past have been banned altogether – which is largely what we see today. Some are badly needed, of course. So in the film bad words were banned, red meat, cigarettes and anything bad for our health was also done away with. Playboy magazine and carnal sex have no place in this reality either. Among others. Ah yes, violence has been eradicated, so the only weapons that exist are in museums and the police take care of more bureaucratic and less emphatic tasks.

Cancellators and canceled

Daredevil presents a future where everything “false” has been overturned. Some can argue too, so much the better and more fun. Either way, the cancellation movement is currently aiming to attack and banish anything they don’t agree with, leading a real witch hunt. On the other hand, many disagree with the occasional occasional exaggeration of advocacy, going overboard and behaving even more badly than has been “undone”. In the film, there is a whole community living on the fringes of society, hidden in drains and sewers, pursued by the authorities for disagreeing with the “clean” way of life that has emerged. Led by the character of Edgar Friendly (Denis Leary), they love to eat burgers, have a beer, watch a nude woman’s magazine and whatever. These are the anti-cancellers, those who designate “mimimi” without exaggerating too much.

Enjoy watching:

Virtual sex

In 1993, when The Daredevil launched, the internet didn’t even exist. Well, not the way we have it today. Okay, this action vehicle wasn’t the first in theaters to feature the concept of virtual sex, but it’s undoubtedly one of the most famous and memorable. In another correct prediction of the feature, virtual sex is a common reality in everyday life in this future. In the movie, this happens due to the ban on real, carnal sex, which we hope will never go out of style in real life. Anyway, maybe even the movie couldn’t imagine the culture we live in (and it’s getting bigger and stronger) of Sugar Daddies and Sugar Babies sites and apps, in addition to the young people who virtually promote themselves in a sexual way in return for money and expensive gifts.

Human and machine interactivity

In the film, the future is strongly guided by machines. Technological records govern our daily lives and tell us what to do and where to go. In addition to helping the police department, around every corner you can interact with highly functional equipment capable of answering any questions and solving problems. There is even a machine to fine those who break the law by swearing. Not to mention the popular videoconference meetings (which were helpful during the pandemic). It is normal that our reality has gone even further, allowing any citizen to have one of these machines at hand at all times and to dictate our life through it.

Schwarzenegger in politics

The professional rivalry between the two biggest action stars of the 1980s and 1990s, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, was well known and escalated into a friendship, with the two taking part in projects together in old age. In the past, however, they hated each other – well, in a bit of a lie. The two were very competitive and continued to share beards in their films. For example, Arnold made fun of Stallone’s biceps in the movie Twin Brothers (1988), passing a poster of Rambo III, released the same year. And in The Last Great Hero (1993), the joke was having Stallone as the protagonist of Terminator 2 (1991). In The Daredevil, also from 1993, Stallone takes it one step further and plays with his colleague’s political aspirations, giving him a library in his name, since he was President of the United States. And the forecast was almost 100%, because in fact the great man was to become governor of California eleven years later.

Lack of toilet paper

From the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, one of the biggest concerns was that we were running out of toilet paper. The rush to markets and stores was constant, when they were in short supply. Many guaranteed their purchase by purchasing a huge amount, which ended up leaving part of the population without the item. At O Demolidor, whether for ecological reasons or for any other reason, the company stopped using paper after using the bathroom. In one of the feature film’s funniest and most iconic jokes, Stallone discovers that instead of the toilet paper roll, in the future, three metal shells are used to clean up. How they are used, don’t ask me.

Vegetarianism

In a world dictated by political correctness, it is clear that vegetarianism would become an essential part of human behavior. This eating practice, of course, has always existed, but we are more and more aware of it. The information is more and more abundant and over the years, people evolve towards a healthier and more lasting experience, eliminating (or at least decreasing) the harmful habits for our organism. In The Daredevil, red meat is simply banned and if you want to buy a good ol ‘burger you have to go underground and buy a “rat-burguer”. Yes, made from rat meat. Another joke is that the best restaurants of the future will be fast food chains turned into haute cuisine – the so-called gourmet menus that we have, for example, in today’s food truck fever. Ah yes, the film also provided for the union of some very famous snacks.

Social distancing

Image result for schwarzenegger meme in demolition manAnother habit brought by Covid, today the watchword is social distance, wear masks and not touch people. Once considered “cool” by many, the behavior has proven to be essential in our new reality in order to keep us away from virus, disease and death. In The Daredevil, human contact is also avoided. In addition to real sex, at one point in the film we noticed the greeting between two policemen who simulated the famous “high-five”, but without actually touching the hand with the hand. The famous “play here without playing”.

Generation “pear milk”

It is necessary to acquire antibodies to eradicate the ailments. However, current generations seem to prefer to avoid the problem, avoid the tangent, and therefore be completely unprotected and powerless in the real world. After all, everyday problems aren’t solved just by virtual cancellations, which may require more direct and immediate actions. By creating their own world, with their own rules, an entire generation can become oblivious to how things actually work. In the film, violence and customary issues have been completely eradicated from reality in the future. But what happens when the past returns and the police are not ready to face brutality? The message after all is: too much innocence can do more harm than good, if we aren’t even aware of the wickedness around us.
