Even before being confirmed, the film already went through a controversial controversy involving Anning’s family, which claimed that the paleontologist’s sexuality had never been confirmed. Her relatives have said Mary’s sex life will bring her humiliation, for being exposed on the big screen.
Lee, for his part, responded to the accusations by saying that “after seeing LGBT history be hetero-normalized in our culture, and given a historical figure whose life does not provide evidence of heterosexual relationships, she is not allowed to gain a new perspective, context? As a gay director, I will continue to explore themes of class, gender and sexuality in my work, treating my characters with the truth and respect they deserve ”.
The filmmaker has received critical acclaim for his work on ‘Kingdom of God’, which debuted at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. The drama focused on the romance between a farmer and an immigrant was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best British film.
