‘Black Widow’ brought a major twist to the identity of the Taskmaster, revealing him as the daughter of Dreykov, mastermind of the KGB’s murderous spy program.
However, the evil alter ego created by David Michelinie and George Perez in the comics is Tony Masters, a spy known for his photographic reflexes, which allow him to copy all of his opponents’ movements and fighting styles.
Because of this, some fans were extremely dissatisfied with the movie version of Taskmaster.
One of them even sent hateful messages to Eric Pearson, the screenwriter of the adaptation directed by Cate Shortland.
In an interview with Comic Book’s Phase Zero podcast, Pearson said the following:
“I made the mistake of looking at the fan messages in my email and someone wrote to me, ‘It’s not my intention to go too far, but I felt betrayed by the revealing Taskmaster’s identity, it was the greatest betrayal of my life and it’s your fault. ‘. “
“I was upset for a second and then I thought, ‘Well, you had a really good life then. If this is the worst thing that has ever happened to you then you must be excited because you were surprised by the movie.
Finally, he said he thought of other alternatives to the villain’s identity, including the original version, but picked the one that made the most sense for the MCU.
“Taskmaster would have other versions than Tony Masters himself. Believe me, I searched very, very hard for a way to connect Tony Masters to the Red Room, but what would be the reason? So I bent down to make the ideas more meaningful for the film and for the puzzle. [que é o MCU]. “
