In an interview with Variety, David Boreanaz revealed that he would no longer want to play vampire Angel during the reboot of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’.
“I support the people doing a reboot of the show, but I’m old. It’s not like we’re the cast of ‘Friends’ coming together. We don’t enjoy in a cafeteria on a couch. But, you know, like all technology, they made Robert De Niro really young.
He adds: “I would like to encourage you to find someone else to play the part.”
Recently, actor Anthony Head, who played the character of Giles in the original series, said he would love to return to the reboot.
“Yes, [eu adoraria retornar]. I don’t know how, because Giles has aged a lot. I may be the head of the board today. But honestly of course I would come back. It was very educational.
He continues, “Fans are still talking a lot about the original series. Survived the new generations. I still don’t understand how we never got from Emmy or any of these awards. People tell me how important the show was to them growing up and how it resonated with them. They often say that Giles was the father figure they missed in their lives. I think that’s the main reason the show is timeless: you feel right at home.
Remember, James Marsters, who played the vampire Spike, is also set to return for the reboot. Sarah Michelle Gellar has confirmed that she has no interest.
The new series wouldn’t replace the iconic role of Sarah Michelle Gellar, but would introduce a new hunter.
“Rebooting is like my ‘Star Wars’. Before I became a screenwriter, I was a fan. For seven years, I watched Buffy Summers grow up, find love, kill that love. I watched her fight, suffer and hunt. There is only one Buffy. An Alex, a Willow, Giles, Cordelia, Oz, Tara, Kendra, Faith, Spike, Angel … They cannot be replaced. Joss Whedon’s brilliant series cannot be reproduced. I won’t try to do that. But here we are … 20 years later … and the world looks a lot scarier. So, maybe it’s time to meet a new hunter. And that’s all I can say.
The reboot is being developed by 20th Century Fox Television and Joss Whedon, creator of the original series, is involved as an executive producer.
Buffy was premiered in the 1992 movie “Buffy – The Vampire Slayer”, played by actress Kristy Swanson. Despite having a bad reputation, the feature film was the basis of the cult series, which debuted in 1997 and ran for 7 seasons until 2003.
The story continued in two series of comics. The 8th season was released between 2007 and 2011, and the 9th debuted in 2011 and still has two unreleased volumes.
