Clive Barker to regain rights to ‘Hellraiser’ in US

According to THR, Clive Barker is set to reclaim the rights to his book “Hellraiser – Reborn from Hell”, being able to control future adaptations of the story.

The author initiated legal proceedings to recover the rights on the basis of the national copyright law, the Copyright Act 1976. By law, authors can recover the rights to their works after a certain period (usually 35 years) by submitting a request. notification within five years.

Barker’s attorney filed the documents in California federal court on Monday, confirming the deal with Park Avenue Entertainment, the production company that currently owns the rights to the story.

Barker will reclaim the rights on December 19, 2021, including its original story and the screenplay for the 1987 film. Anything that is featured later in the franchise will not be part of the deal.

It should be remembered that Clive Barker will be the executive producer of the series “ Hellraiser ”, based on the franchise he created, which is being developed by HBO.

This will be his first involvement in the franchise since ‘Hellraiser IV – Herança Maldita’, released in 1996.

David Gordon Green, from the Halloween reboot, will be tasked with directing the pilot and several other episodes of the first season.

The series is written by Mark Verheiden (“Daredevil”) and Michael Dougherty (“Tales of Halloween”).

The production will not be a reboot or a sequel to the original franchise, but an expansion of the original mythology, inspired by Clive Barker’s book, “The Hellbound Heart.”

Rumors suggest Pinhead will be one of the main characters in the series.

Remember that David Bruckner (‘The Ritual’) was hired to helm a movie reboot, which will be scripted by duo Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski.

The original film, released in 1987 and directed by Clive Barker, revolved around an unfaithful woman meets her dead lover’s zombie, who is chased by demons after escaping his sadomasochistic hell.

In total, the original franchise had 10 films, but only the first four hit theaters.
