Today, global pop icon Cher turns 75. Symbol of fashion, daring and elegant, the singer has conquered millions of fans around the world with her music, but she was also present in some successful films. In honor of the singer, actress and producer, CinePOP separated the best films with the participation of Cher. A curiosity is that in her long film career, she accumulates dozens of participations by playing herself.

My mother is a mermaid

In this 1990s classic, Rachel (Cher) is a somewhat different, so to speak, 1960s single mom who often changes cities with her two daughters (played by Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci) when she finds problems. However, when they move to a small town in Massachusetts, the girls start showing off their typical teenage issues, and Rachel meets a strange salesman (Bob Hoskins), who can change the family’s life for good. The film is available on Amazon Prime Video.

The Witches of Eastwick

Directed by George Miller, this comedy features a monstrous cast directed by Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer, Susan Sarandon and Jack Nicholson. In the plot, three friends who have lost their companions meet every week in a small town to talk about various topics, mainly about what the ideal man would be. So eccentric Daryl Van Horn (Nicholson) suddenly comes in and flirts with them. Until he reveals that they are witches and begins a fun story that will turn their world upside down.

Mamma Mia: Here we are again!

Following the musical that enchanted the world, we followed the story of Donna (Lily James) in her youth until she reached Kalokari Island. Mixing past and present, we met the grandmother of our protagonists, Ruby Sheridan, who is experienced by none other than Cher. And yes, she lets out her voice at the end of the movie. This feature is on Netflix.

James Dean, the myth survives

A classic from the 1980s, a James Dean fan club comes together for the 20th anniversary of the star’s death. Everything went well, until three women showed up to talk about past cases of the actor. One of them claims to have a son of the star, the others are a waitress (Cher) and a mysterious woman who doesn’t seem so strange to fans. It’s an interesting dramatic comedy.

Dear and the lonely elephant

This 2021 documentary tells with great sensitivity the true story of the release of Kaavan’s elephant, who became famous for being the loneliest elephant in the world, and his transfer from Pakistan to a pachyderm refuge in Cambodia. The plot shows how the influence of singer Cher, who has worked with vets, made the transfer viable.

The price of a choice

Released on TV, this drama tells the story of a university student who became pregnant with one of her professors, who is married. Knowing about the pregnancy, the teacher ended her relationship with the young woman, who decided to have an abortion. Amidst controversy over whether or not abortion is a crime, she seeks out Dr. Beth Thompson (Cher) to perform the procedure. The film went on to become HBO’s most-watched film and was nominated for three Golden Globes, including the award for Best Supporting Actress for Television for Cher.

Marks of Fate

This 1980s drama earned Cher the Best Actress at Cannes award and a Golden Globe nomination. The plot follows a young man with craniodiaphyseal dysplasia, much loved by his family, but because of the prejudices of street people and classmates. However, she is an amazing, fun and kind person. His mother, Rusty (Cher), seeing the boy’s suffering, reconciles his life as a motorcyclist in order to give the boy the best possible life.

Moon spell

In the film that won Cher an Oscar for Best Actress, she plays Loretta, a widow in her late forties who decides to remarry, but now with an older man. However, her life takes a turn when she meets her brother-in-law, a young baker and aspiring idiot (yes, that’s Nicolas Cage), who will ignite her beliefs and steal Loretta’s heart.
