“Demon Slayer” Becomes BIGGEST Box Office for an Anime in Cinema History

The anime “Demon Slayer – Mugen Train: The Movie” became the highest grossing anime in movie history.

Worldwide, the film grossed $ 455 million, beating the then-leader “Chihiro’s Journey” ($ 383.4 million).

The film has become a phenomenon.

In the United States, the film grossed $ 47.7 million in total and topped “Pokemon 2” ($ 43.7 million), making “Demon Slayer” the second highest grossing anime in the United States, behind only “Pokemon” ($ 85.7 million). The film is a direct continuation of the first season of the Demon Slayer anime.

The plot follows Tanjiro Kamado and his sister, Nezuko, who lead peaceful lives until they are attacked by evil beings. In addition to losing all of his family members, Tanjiro saw his sister turn into one of them. In an attempt to make her human again and prevent other people from going through the same thing, the boy transforms into a demon slayer.

Based on the manga by Koyoharu Gotouge, published between 2016 and 2020 in the weekly Shonen Jump, with 23 linked volumes in total, the plot has been set in Japan for about 100 years.

The film is directed by Haruo Sotozaki.
