In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, director Scott Derrickson revealed details about the one scene he had to cut from horror “The Black Phone.”
“I believe there’s a line you can’t cross when dealing with kids. The riskiest scene I’ve ever shot in my career is when Gwen gets beaten up by her dad. Some people involved in the film asked me to remove this scene, but I felt the film wouldn’t work without it. The scene existed to not only show the trauma they go through on a daily basis, but also the bond between them. You you feel bad for them and realize how much they care for each other. But at the same time, there was a version of this scene that everyone would have disliked.
He adds, “I knew I didn’t want to show the scene exactly. I wanted the audience to feel more than see this happen. We feel the scene through the performances of the actors. However, the part that upsets people the most is when Gwen is scolded by her father. Madeline McGraw’s performance is so powerful, heartfelt and real.
The horror hits theaters nationwide on July 21.
Critically acclaimed, the film earned an impressive 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The big blow is in the casting. Young James Ransone and Madeleine McGraw are a spectacle on stage, and Ethan Hawke is pretty creepy as the villain (his mask is weird). Your character could be better developed, but that doesn’t affect the end result.

“I just came out of the premiere of ‘The Black Phone’ at CinemaCon. It’s definitely one of Blumhouse’s best movies. The child actors are brilliant, especially stars Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw. Ethan Hawke has never been so scary or terrifying.”

The Black Phone is one of the films I’m most looking forward to this year, along with Jordan Peele’s next one.
Scott Derrickson may have stumbled, but he’s got the best horror of the last decade aka The Entity https://t.co/P7MLRYXDsF pic.twitter.com/2qHE00w7jX
