Edward Irastorza, visual effects supervisor of ‘The Labyrinth of the Faun’, dies at 52

Renowned and acclaimed supervisor and visual effects producer Edward Irastorza, best known for his work on the Oscar-winning film “The Labyrinth of the Faun,” died at age 52 on December 21.

The announcement was made recently via his Facebook account, saying, “It is with great sadness that I must inform you that my brother Edward has passed away. Although he has been ill for over a year, we did not expect him to say goodbye to us. He was excited for Christmas. Unfortunately, he did not succeed ”.

Born in 1968, Irastorza began his career with visual effects genius Phil Tippett, starting to gain recognition by working alongside Sam Raimi in the series “Hercules” and “Xena: The Warrior Princess”.

His most famous forays are associated with Guillermo Del Toro films including ‘Hellboy‘, ‘Blade 2’ and the aforementioned ‘The Labyrinth of the Faun’ – a film for which he was nominated at the BAFTAs and won a Goya award. In 2015, he collaborated with Robert Rodriguez on the adaptation of the graphic novel “Sin City”.
