When the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise began, creator JK Rowling was Johnny Depp’s chief advocate as the villainous Grindelwald performer.
Despite the criticism the star had received from fans, Rowling stood firm in insisting on the choice.
However, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the author did not protest Depp’s resignation after Warner Bros. has decided to remove it from the next film, postponed to 2022.
As Depp lost his case against his ex-wife Amber Heard, who accused him of physical and psychological assault, it seems Rowling did not want to jeopardize his relationship with the studio.
Plus, she was also butchered by fans because of her controversial statements of prejudice and homophobia … and getting involved in a new discussion would make your situation even more complicated.
And, according to Variety magazine, WarnerMedia chose to go ahead with the disconnection of the protagonist from the saga to prevent his image from being associated with the tumultuous life of the star.
It’s important to note that after the release of “The Crimes of Grindelwald,” telecom giant AT&T merged with Warner Bros. parent company called Time Warner.
This merger resulted in significant changes to WarnerMedia’s board of directors, such as the hiring of Jason Killar as the new CEO and Anna Sarnoff as head of the studio.
The arrival of the new directors has caused studio officials to reflect on the cost-benefit ratio of keeping Depp involved in their projects. Although his popularity was truly great, his controversial demeanor eclipsed and compromised his work in the “Harry Potter” universe saga.
And as Variety pointed out, there was “a general lack of tolerance for the kind of controversy that every major studio has had to grapple with at least occasionally in courting mercurial – but historically popular – talent like Depp.” These “losses” led to the “dismissal” of the veteran.
After a major loss in UK courts for being a “female drummer,” Johnny Depp was released by Warner Bros. from the “Fantastic Animals” franchise.
In a statement, Warner confirmed the actor’s departure:
“Johnny Depp will be leaving the Fantastic Beasts franchise. We thank Johnny for his work on the films so far. Fantastic Beasts 3 is currently in production and the role of Gellert Grindelwald will be reviewed. The film will be released in theaters around the world in the summer of 2022. “
Depp bet on his Instagram that Warner Bros. he asked to resign from the franchise and he accepted the request.
“In light of recent events, I would like to make this brief statement,” he wrote. “First of all, I want to thank everyone who gave me support and loyalty. I am honored and touched to have received several messages of love and affection, especially in recent days. Second, I would like to let you know that you have been asked to leave Warner Bros. and quit my role as Grindelwald in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise – and I have respected and accepted that request. Finally, I would like to say this: The surreal judgment of the UK court will not change my struggle to tell the truth and I confirm that I intend to appeal. My resolve remains firm and I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false. My life and my career will not be defined by this moment ”.
Last month, Forbes magazine published a critical article on the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise and the end of the “Harry Potter” saga spin-off.
Since the inception of the new film franchise, which has confirmed five films, countless controversies have started to surround the production. The first of these was the hiring of Johnny Depp to play the villainous Grindelwald: Depp had faced a difficult trial alongside ex-wife Amber Heard, accused of sexual and domestic violence. Months after the release of the second feature film, it was proven that both sides had committed the crimes.
The second rose with Ezra Miller. The interpreter of Credence Barebone / Aurelius Dumbledore has been spotted assaulting a fan and since then fans have called for his removal from the saga.
Most recently, the storyteller has drawn sacred attention to her by posting transphobic articles on her official Twitter, being struck by countless stars from the original franchise. For this reason, the renowned newspaper analyzed the numbers of the first films of “Fantastic Animals” and made an unfavorable outlook.
The factors in question, combined with the swaying narrative construction and cold reception from audiences and critics for the latest film, may be a sign of a premature end to the prequel. After all, “ Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald ” (2018) saw a dramatic drop in revenue, grossing just $ 614 million (on a budget of $ 200 million). By comparison, the first iteration had a box office of $ 814 million – which is also a high level for the Wizarding Universe, considering the number of “Harry Potter”.
Now, the main element that will decide the fate of “Fantastic Beasts” is the audience. After all, according to the magazine, “if fans jump out of the boat, the franchise will follow the same fate as” X-Men “and” Divergent “” (for those who don’t remember, both sagas had a resolution or a terrible cancellation in movie theaters.).
Recordings for the sequel were due to start on March 16, but were postponed indefinitely by order of the London local government.
‘Fantastic Beasts 3’, still without an official subtitle, is set to open on November 12, 2021.
