Godzilla vs. Kong director reveals plans for abandoned King Kong sequel in 2005

Long before he was hired to direct “ Godzilla vs Kong, ” Adam Wingard revealed to Yahoo Entertainment that he almost made a sequel to “ King Kong, ” directed by Peter Jackson in 2005.

The filmmaker said he was selected by Jackson to direct the feature film, until then titled “ Ilha da Caveira, ” at the time.

However, the plot produced by Univeral Pictures would be completely different from “ Kong: Skull Island, ” directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts in 2017.

“I almost made a movie called ‘Ilha da Caveira’ … It would be a plot that unfolds today, very different from what we saw in ‘Kong: Ilha da Skullira’ … But the idea was rejected and I followed, ”he said.

Luckily for Wingard, producer Mary Parent, who was vice president of production for Universal Pictures, ended up taking over the same role at Legendary Entertainment, the company that created MonsterVerse.

Wingard’s passion for Kong’s story ultimately led to him being asked to work on the franchise’s final film.

“I remember Mary talking about my idea for ‘Skull Island’ and she said it would be awesome. I don’t remember the script very well, just a few details. It would be these days and there was an opening in which the characters were in a museum … At the end of the scene, it is revealed that the museum kept King Kong’s gigantic skeleton. It was like a relic from the past and Skull Island would be a bit of a myth and no one knew what was going on there. Somehow these characters would come back there and the plot would unfold from there.

Recalling that “ Godzilla vs Kong ” hits national theaters on April 29.

According to Box Office Mojo, the sequel is on track to hit the $ 300 million mark at the global box office.

Budgeted at $ 155 million, the sequel directed by Adam Wingard has already grossed $ 48.5 million in just one week of its debut in the United States.

Shot since March 26 in countries like China, South Korea and Mexico, the film has also raised $ 237.3 million worldwide.

Considering that many cinemas still remain closed or at reduced capacity due to the coronavirus pandemic, the numbers are staggering.

Recalling that “ Wonder Woman 1984 ” was Warner Bros’ last big debut and only grossed $ 166 million worldwide over 12 weeks of exposure.

At this rate, it’s possible that “Godzilla vs. Kong” could hit US $ 500 million in the first four weeks, as it didn’t even make its debut in some regions.
