“Impeachment: American Crime Story”: Cobie Smulders to replace Betty Gilpin in season 3

According to Variety, Cobie Smulders (“How I Met Your Mother”) joined the cast of Season 3 of “American Crime Story,” titled “Impeachment.”

The actress will replace Betty Gilpin – who had to abandon the project after scheduling conflicts caused by the COVID pandemic – and play Ann Coulter, a controversial talkative commentator.

Season 3 will premiere on September 7.

The cast features Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp; Clive Owen as Bill Clinton; Beanie Feldstein as Monica Lewinsky; Annaleigh Ashford as Paula Jones; Billy Eichner as Matt Drudge; and Edie Falco as Hillary Clinton.

The plot is based on the non-fiction novel A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President, signed by Jeffrey Toobin.

Sarah Burgess will script the new episodes and will also be an executive producer alongside creator Ryan Murphy and Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Brad Falchuk, Larry Karaszewski, Scott Alexander, Alexis Martin Woodall and Paulson.
