‘Interview with the Vampire’ Will Be a ‘Gothic Romance’, Showrunner Reveals

‘Interview with the Vampire,’ a remake of the classic 1994 film and adaptation of Anne Rice’s iconic novel of the same name, is opening soon, and during a recent press conference, producer and showrunner Rolin Jones revealed that the new version will be more of a gothic novel than a horror story (via ComicBook.com).

“I said to [os executivos da AMC]: ‘I don’t think it’s a horror series, I think it’s a gothic romance. I want to write a beautiful, very aggressive, exciting, toxic story,” he said. “And they accepted.”

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, star Sam Reid, who brings iconic vampire Lestat to life in the new version, revealed how the remake expands the universe of feature film and romance.

“I love the movie. I also love Tom Cruise’s performance in the movie,” he said. “But what we were able to do was when Anne wrote the second book, she broke the character in half a bit and we were able to better understand her story. So that’s what we did. We brought that second interview they have, so Louis has a more nuanced version of Lestat. So I can bring those fantastical elements that she talks about in the books that we don’t see in the movies, because [ele] it’s only two hours long and is based more on the original book. We are looking at an entire universe. That’s very cool”.

In an interview with EW, executive producer Mark Johnson commented on the project and revealed that the story would be more faithful than the film in terms of storytelling – although Rice did write the screenplay for the 1994 feature.

“We tried to stay true to the spirit of the book as long as we could, but it’s a very modern take on it,” he revealed. “In many ways, our show is more faithful to the book than the movie was, which is ironic given that Anne Rice herself wrote the screenplay for the movie.”

The cast includes Sam Reid (‘The Newsreader’), who will play the vampire Lestat; Jacob Anderson (“Game of Thrones”), who will play Louis de Pointe du Lac; Eric Bogosian (‘Billions’), who will play Daniel Molloy; Assad Zaman, who will play Rashid; and Bailey Bass (‘Avatar 2’), who will play Claudia, a young woman turned into a vampire by Louis and Lestat.

The plot of the first book revolves around vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac as he tells his life story to a reporter, specifically how he was turned into a vampire and then mentored by Lestat de Lioncourt.

Alan Taylor (“Game of Thrones”) will direct the first two episodes.

Eight episodes have been ordered for the first season, which is slated to premiere in 2022.

Rolin Jones (“Friday Night Lights”) will serve as showrunner in addition to writing the script for the production.
