Zack Snyder revealed important new characters from the Lord of Apokolips universe
Over the past few days, director Zack Snyder has made a real commitment to publicizing his upcoming Zack Snyder’s Justice League movie which will hit HBO Max, releasing teasers for a few seconds, he revealed how his version’s color scheme for the league is. of Justice and, mainly, engaging audiences with some very interesting visual moments like Superman in a black suit using his heat vision and, more recently, the Darkseid reveal.
In fact, the villain had already appeared in the first trailer for this version of the director released in November 2020 but still in a version whose CGI was not finalized, which had been enough commented at the time. Now the villain’s look looks much better optimized than before and also counts in its favor with an ambient lighting system that highlights dark tones, hiding any traces waiting for improvement.
At the same time, it is possible to see two other characters in the same frame; these with visuals not as crisp as Darkseid but identifiable. They are Desaad and Grandma Kindness; both being prominent members of the alien court, as well as the main villain of the movie Steppe Wolf. All three, however, belong to a larger group in the DC Universe called the New Gods.
Designed by Jack Kirby in the 1970s, these characters emerged to represent a revival in the concept of mythologies at DC Comics. On the publisher’s official page, the definition given to identify the group is “The new gods are just that – they are new gods.” They came into being after the world of the old gods, the gods of classical mythology, was destroyed during Ragnarok. The world of these known deities was separated into two worlds, eternally interconnected, but totally different. One is called New Genesis and the other is Apokolips ”.
In theory, this division is a dichotomy of good and evil, but it is not as simple as it seems. The clashes between New Genesis and Apokolips typically involve a high level of destruction on both sides, and often a complete disregard on the part of rulers Darkseid and Highfather for collateral losses. Either way, in the hellish world of Apokolips, the hierarchy has a well-defined top: Uxas (nicknamed Darkseid) and below is where the fight takes place.
While the Sovereign of Destruction is obsessed with obtaining the anti-life equation (a kind of knowledge that would transform the whole unity of thought of beings in the universe into one under his command), his minions are find themselves among the plots to harm themselves and win favor with the master. Starting with Grandma Kindness, the most sadistic of Darkseid’s minions; Originally recruited as a soldier, she immediately gained the respect of her master to the point of becoming responsible for recruiting and training new soldiers.
His tactics are then as disastrous as they can get, employing completely brainwashing and constant torture to mold a completely service-oriented mindset for Darkseid. His infamy also affects the forces that oppose him to the point that often being taken prisoner by Apokolips is not an option, as it would make him vulnerable to the interrogation techniques of Grandma Kindness.
Another newcomer to torture tactics is Desaad, but with a twist: In Anakin Skywalker’s best style, Desaad was gradually wowed by the “dark side” (in this case, literally) until it falls into its current state. He was not born to Apokolips, unlike his previously mentioned colleague, but to New Genesis; thus, in theory, he was considered a naturally pure being.
However, Darkseid gradually manipulated certain situations that came to the surface of Desaad’s appreciation for torture. So he came to a situation where he was already so corrupted that he could not stay in New Genesis and went to Apokolips. He also has a sister, Bernadeth, who is the right-hand man of Grandma Kindness and constantly finds himself between his brother’s arguments with his boss.
What is evident is that the Apokolips system is an eternal struggle for power and who will be honored by Darkseid’s trust. Everyone serves the leader, but if not, they are potential enemies. It is known that Kirby’s inspiration for the creation of Darkseid was the figure of Adolf Hitler, so it is noteworthy that the complex distrust of the foundations of barbaric regimes of the Nazi leader with the leader of Apokolips s’ inscribed in such an organic and rich. path.
