“The Matrix” is regularly voted one of the most inventive and influential science fiction films of all time, and nearly had the first trans character in history in a blockbuster.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Keanu Reeves brought up the controversy over the cut of a transgender character in the first film, from 1999.

The first storyline had the character of Switch, who would originally be a man in the real world and a woman in The Matrix, but was ultimately transformed into a straight woman in the final storyline.

“It was another time and people still had a lot of prejudices. I don’t think the studio and the world were ready for this, ”he said.

Recently, director Lilly Wachowski finally decided to confirm that the story was trans from the start.

“I’m glad they’ve now made it known that this was the original intention,” she said in a video interview to promote the new documentary Disclosure. “The world was not quite ready, at the corporate level … the corporate world was not ready for this [na época]”.
