A few weeks ago it was revealed that Neve Campbell would not be returning for ‘Scream 6’ after being offered a small salary – causing a stir amongst fans.
In an interview with Variety, Melissa Barrera — who made her debut as Sam Carpenter in the latest film “Scream” — said she understands Campbell’s motivation.
“It was shocking, but also, as a woman, I get it. Especially as a woman of color, I deal with these things all the time where I feel like I’m not getting paid what I know I’m worth. But generally to me, I feel like it’s because I’m Latina, and they don’t value us as much as white women. So if Neve being a white woman doesn’t feel appreciated , it shows what a problem it is in the industry. I applaud her for standing up for what she believes in.
For those unaware, Campbell has been the face of the franchise portraying Sidney Prescott since the first movie, directed by Wes Craven in 1996.
Scheduled for March 2023, the 6th film will be the first without the character.
However, the star told ET Online that she would be open to returning in future films if there was a proper deal with Paramount Pictures.
Have fun watching:
“I haven’t finished that chapter and I care about those movies. If they came to see me with adequate compensation for my work, if it was value consistent with the return I’m giving them, I would consider it. sure I care about these new admins [Matt Bettinelli-Olpin e Tyler Gillett]. They did a great job on the latest film, and I can only wish them the best.
‘Scream’ fans were furious to learn that Neve Campbell wouldn’t be returning for the sixth film after being offered a low salary – which caused a stir.
In an interview with People, the actress pointed out the sexism in Paramount’s offer.
“I honestly think that if I had been a man and had acted in five films of a huge franchise for 25 years, they would have offered me a decent salary. And, in my soul, I just couldn’t not do it. I couldn’t walk into a plateau feeling unappreciated and feeling the injustice, or lack of justice, around it.”
The actress previously explained why she’s not returning: “I didn’t feel that what I was offered was equal to the value I bring to this franchise, and what I brought to this franchise , for 25 years. As a woman in this profession, I think it is very important for us to be valued and to strive to be valued.
Despite the claims, fans believe Paramount will try to surprise fans like Sony did with the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in “Spider-Man: No Homecoming.”
The studio is always listening to fans, proof of which is having re-released the entire ‘Sonic’ movie after the backlash with the hedgehog look.
Rumors indicate that the actress will only appear in two scenes in the new film and will return as the protagonist of “Scream 7”.
“Scream 6” will star Jasmin Savoy Brown (Mindy), Mason Gooding (Chad), Jenna Ortega (Tara) and Courteney Cox (Gale).
Rounding out the cast are newcomers Samara Weaving (“The Nanny”), Tony Revolori (“Spider-Man: No Homecoming”), Dermot Mulroney, Jack Champion, Liana Liberato, Devyn Nekoda, Josh Segarra and Henry Czerny.
Check out the synopsis:
“Sam, Tara, Chad and Mindy, the four survivors of the massacre perpetrated by Ghostface, decide to leave Woodsboro in search of a fresh start in another town. But it doesn’t take long for them to become the target of a new masked serial killer.”
