PANIC | We have put together several interesting THEORIES about the slasher horror franchise.

Published

on

Every CinePOP reader has noticed that here, in addition to superhero and blockbuster movies, we love horror movies. Notably the slasher franchise Scream (1996-2011), created by Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson. Although not the creator of the genre, the film helped revolutionize it for the new times and its influence was so strong that it is repeated to this day. In other words, every time you watch a young horror movie with lots of references, metalanguage, and humor, don’t forget to thank the feature film mentioned.

With the fifth film in the franchise awaiting its release in January 2022, it’s the most special time for all fans to start celebrating the beloved horror film series and heat the engines with the previous chapters. . The original, for example, celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2021 – another cause for celebration. The underrated Scream 4 would also have an anniversary, ending 10 years of its debut this year. In other words, there is no shortage of reasons to celebrate horror films (and who knows, maybe even the series – which had three seasons).

To get in the mood, we decided to go on the wave of fans and their craziest theories. Together with our colleagues at Screen Rant, we picked out the craziest fan theories from all four films and the series. Check it out below and comment, saying which ones make sense and which are the purest fantasy illusion. Ah yes, remembering that the text is full of spoils from the four films.

Before starting the analysis, watch the trailer for the new movie that released today:

Panic | Important points to pay attention to in the first trailer – including a theory that could change the franchise

Enjoy watching:

Dewey is an assassin

Well, we can already say in advance that for us this theory is only a fanciful illusion. The point is, there is a fan theory online that Dewey has actually been a murderer from the start, pretending to be a helpless goof. Something like the twist on Bryan Singer’s cult thriller Os Suspetos (1995). Although here it looks more like something from the parody of Everyone (2000), which actually made that universe’s “Dewey clone” the main culprit of everything. We prefer Dewey the way he is: a lovable blunderer. Other than that, the character has come close to death on several occasions throughout the films in the franchise.

The series is fiction

This third theory doesn’t talk about any of the movies that hit theaters, but rather theorizes the Scream TV series. Launched in 2015, the MTV show ran for three seasons until 2019, with the first two essentially being a remake of what we’ve seen on the big screen so far. I mean, the main characters from the first two seasons were younger versions of what we had seen in the movies, like the young lady, the horror film specialist, and the suspicious boyfriend. We even had a famous first victim. These elements led fans to theorize that the TV series was nothing more than fiction, existing in the fictional universe of Scream. It’s like the “The Stab” movies are the “movies in the movie” and the Scream TV series is “the series in the movie”. Do you buy this idea?

Kirby is still alive

One of the coolest characters added to the Scream mythology was Kirby from the fourth movie, played by Hayden Panettiere. The blonde girl quickly became a big fan favorite, with many signing a petition at the studio to bring her back in the fifth film. There’s only one problem: Kirby was murdered in the third act of Scream 4. Well, or?

Although the actress’ presence has not been confirmed in the cast of the Fifth, fans have a theory that she is not really dead, fueled by the director himself, the late Wes Craven and the character interpreter. In behind-the-scenes comments on the fourth film, the director said he deliberately moved Kirby after being stabbed to raise the question of whether she was alive. The point is that whenever a character remains alive in the franchise, even if he was seriously injured and presumed dead in a previous scene, he is confirmed to have survived the outcome of the film – which Kirby did. has not.

Kevin Williamson is one of the names responsible for Panic’s existence and success in the movies. However, the screenwriter stayed out of the franchise’s third feature film. But the writer did not fail to write a treatment of what he wanted the story to be. The problem? His writing touched the wound too much, and with the attacks on American colleges like Columbine, the story was just too touchy. So everything was rewritten with a plot set in Hollywood. But Williamson’s idea didn’t go unnoticed, and many fans believe the author reused his story for The Follow series, starring Kevin Bacon, which he also created. The plot tells the story of a murderer who awakens a legion of impersonators – just like what we would see in Kevin Williamson’s Scream 3.

Roman is Panic’s third assassin

Still in regards to Scream 3, the film, let’s say, less popular with fans, there is a theory that concerns the killer of this film, director Roman. In the end, he turns out to be the killer, but not only that, but also Sidney’s brother and the orchestrator behind the entire original film. According to the outcome of the third, he was responsible for inciting Billy and Stu’s murderous instincts, revealing the boy’s father’s betrayal with Sidney’s mother (and himself). So far all is well, everything is said in the film. However, fans take it a step further, believing that Roman was already included in the original’s plot, appearing in some scenes disguised as Ghostface to choose Billy and Stu’s next victims. This one felt a bit too much to us, after all, when Scream hit theaters no one, not even the creators, knew it would spawn the movie two, let alone three …

Rumors about Panic 5

Since Scream 5 has kept its plot under lock and key (and should remain so), fans are in an uproar theorizing about everything and more. One of the theories is that one of the three protagonists – Sidney, Dewey and Gale – may not survive this time around, or maybe all three will be eliminated, making way for a new protagonist in the series. Well, that’s hardly new and it’s been theorized about since the first sequel, with the trio still on the verge of kicking their asses. However, that would be a good way to pass the baton, after all, the trio are almost fifty years old and still shy away from masked kids. Another theory on a narrative possibility of the fifth concerns Jill, Sidney’s psychopathic cousin. Some fans believe she may have survived and the plot would include her.

Stuart, or Stu, is one of the original assassins in the film. The Madman has also become one of the franchise’s most beloved characters. One curiosity is that Kevin Williamson’s original script for Scream 3 would actually reveal that Stu did not die of his injuries in the first Scream and would return in the third. The idea was dismissed. However, fans are still hopeful that the character could appear at some point. And the theory here involves the second movie. Character performer Matthew Lillard appears as an extra in Scream 2, albeit with long blonde hair (likely a wig). What happens is Lillard went to visit his friends’ set and ended up recording a moment where only fanatics can point him at the bottom of the screen. This was enough for theories to emerge that it wasn’t just Lillard as an extra, but that it was also Stu who was in hiding for a comeback.

Supernatural clothing

This is one of the craziest theories and also one of the most curious. It’s no surprise that filmmakers are embracing fan theories and actually including them in their narratives. But I believe if they ever wanted to incorporate this one, it would defeat the purpose and the fun of the franchise. Here, fans swear on their feet that the Ghostface costume gives the killer who uses it superpowers. Yes, that’s what you read. There is a theory online that the villain’s uniform gives exceptional strength and endurance to the psychopath wearing it, thus explaining how some of the Withered Assassins overwhelm their victims and also how they survive such damage done during the projection. We just don’t know how that would work, as every killer wears a different costume and not the same every time.

The ultimate metalanguage

The films in the Scream franchise have always been known for their high level of metalanguage. It’s like the characters not only know everything about horror movies, but they even know they are inside a horror movie. Well, some fans took this “journey” even further and started to theorize the following: What if the films in the Scream franchise were, in fact, films themselves, adaptations of author Gale’s books? Weathers on what really happened in real life.

In other words, we would then have with “A Punhalada” the film within the film within the film. Have you ever blown your mind? According to fans, this explains the great physical exaggeration of some films, with little connection to physics or reality. And also the fact that Gale is always portrayed heroically. According to fans, it’s because everything we see is based on what she wrote. I believe if that were the case, many would be less than happy to see four films, without ever having seen the “real story”.

Bonus: the second Panic Killer 3

Here I decided to join in the fun and participate myself with my own theory on the Scream franchise. I’m not really into theories, because I think everything you see on screen was what the director wanted to show us and I’m not good at “continuing the film off screen”. In other words, fun as they are, I don’t really believe in any of the theories presented above. What I believe is what I will reveal here. Panic 3 is the most irregular of the franchise. It’s because he had a script cut out by the studio. The original idea was to have two killers, like every other movie in the franchise. However, in the end, we only revealed one: Roman.

If you look online you’ll see that there are several reports from people involved in the production that the second killer is Angelina, the actress played by Emily Mortimer – who was Roman’s secret girlfriend. In various parts of the film, Angelina appears suspiciously to film characters and audiences alike: whether she survives an explosion and disappears, whether in a bathroom caught in the Ghostface costume and even in “his death” offscreen, strategically. armed from afar. Obviously, also during some attacks in the movie, we noticed that it would take two people to adjust to the timing of the killer. So in fact, Scream 3’s second killer is more than a theory, it’s actually a patched edition that leaves some points hanging due to a modified script.
