One of “Doctor Who’s” most iconic showrunners, Steven Moffat, has praised Ncuti Gatwa, an actor set to live out the new take on the famous character. Gatwa rose to fame for his role in ‘Sex Education’ and was recently announced as the new incarnation of ‘Doctor Who’.
Steven Moffat, who served as screenwriter for six seasons of the acclaimed and long-running British sci-fi series, opened up about Gatwa and how he reacted to the actor’s audition for the role in an interview with Empire. “Russell T. Davies showed me the audition tape and Gatwa is magnificent: both a brand new hero and the same wonderful, crazy old doctor we’ve always known.”
Gatwa will be the 14th Doctor in the story released in May 2022, and the actor has already revealed that he has to hide the secret for a few months. He will inherit the role of Jodie Whittaker, who played the Doctor for three seasons. Ncuti Gatwa is the first black actor to portray the main series character and the second after Jo Martin, who played the role in 2020’s “Fugitive Doctor.”
T. Davies has previously commented on Ncuti Gatwa, calling him a “brilliant, bold and radiant” talent and said he was cast seconds after leaving Davies and the show’s producers “stunned”. He also said that working with the actor is an honor and that he looks forward to the premiere of the new “Doctor Who”. Ncuti Gatwa’s debut in the series still has no fixed date.
