“Summer of Soul”: Black music is celebrated in the high profile scene from the acclaimed documentary; Watch!

Searchlight Pictures has released a new scene from the acclaimed musical documentary “Summer of Soul,” which marks the directorial debut of musician Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson.

In the material in question, the group Gladys Knight & The Pips put on a powerful performance of “I Heard It Through The Grapevine”.

Revision | Summer of Soul: documentary saves black music festival ignored by American history

The documentary is part a musical film, part a historical construct created through an epic event that celebrated the culture, fashion and importance of the black community. For six weeks in the summer of 1969, just 100 miles from Woodstock, the Harlem Cultural Festival was held, filmed at Mount Morris Park. The tapes had never been seen before. “Summer of Soul” shows the importance of history and is a testament to the healing power of music in times of crisis, past and present.

The work features performances by music legends including Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, BB King and many more.

“Summer of Soul” won the Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and is set to premiere July 2 on Hulu and in US theaters. In Brazil, there is still no release forecast.
