‘The Color Purple’: director’s musical version of ‘Black Is King’ gets debut date

Warner Bros. it is already preparing its future releases and the year 2023 promises to be excellent news for moviegoers.

And as announced last Wednesday (23), the musical version of ‘A Cor Púrpura’ has a premiere date. The production will hit theaters on December 20, 2023.

The confirmation was also accompanied by the green light from the studio for the film to enter the pre-production phase.

Blitz Bazawule, co-director of one of the sensations of the year, “Black Is King”, will take charge of the project.

Marcus Gardley (The Chi) signs the screenplay, which will include lyrics and music from the acclaimed Broadway musical.

“The Color Purple” will be based on both the 2005 musical and the literary work of Alice Walker, as well as the film version by Steven Spielberg, starring Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg.

The original feature film, released in 1985, won 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

The work will star Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones in production. It should be noted that the latter also took on the same role in the eighteenth adaptation.

The musical version also features Scott Sanders as a producer.
