Read the full synopsis:

“When Cora Seaborne’s brilliant and domineering husband passes away, she begins her new life as a widow with relief and sadness: her marriage was not happy. Married at nineteen, this woman of exceptional intelligence and curiosity was not suited to the role of wife in society. Seeking refuge in the great outdoors and outdoors after the funeral, Cora leaves London for a visit to the Essex coast, accompanied by her eleven-year-old son, Francis, and the boy’s nanny, Martha, his fiercely protective friend.

While admiring the place, Cora learns an intriguing rumor of a formidable creature that roams the swamps and makes human lives. After nearly 300 years, the mythical Essex Serpent is said to be back, taking the life of a young man on New Years Eve. As a passionate naturalist with no patience for superstition, Cora is immediately fascinated and convinced that what locals consider a magical sea beast may be an unknown species. Eager to investigate, she is introduced to the local vicar, William Ransome. Will is also wary of rumors. But, unlike Cora, this man of faith is convinced that rumors are caused by moral panic, an escape from true belief.
