According to Variety, Oscar nominee Antonio Banderas (“Pain and Glory”) will star in the miniseries “The Monster of Florence,” which revolves around the infamous Italian serial killer of the same name.

Supervised by Studiocanal, the production is based on the non-fiction novel of the same name by novelist Douglas Preston and police reporter Mario Spezi (who will be played by Banderas in the adaptation).

The story centers on the extraordinary investigation into “one of the most notorious serial murder cases in European history”, as the description points out. In the account, Spezi was even accused of being the culprit, although he and Preston ultimately identified the killer and conducted an interview with him. The book has sold over half a million copies and has been published in 24 languages.

Nikolaj Arcel, Danish filmmaker known as “The Queen’s Lover”, joins as director of the series and also signs the screenplay alongside Anders Thomas Jensen.

Banderas is one of the executive producers alongside Emanuel Nuñez.
