According to Deadline, HBO has recruited two new members to the cast of the ambitious adaptation “The Last of Us”, a series based on the famous game franchise.

Reports say Con O’Neill (‘Chernobyl’) and Murray Bartlett (‘The White Lotus’) were hired to produce. O’Neill will bring Bill, acquainted with protagonist Joel to life just before the pandemic that hit the planet and is now one of the survivors of the suburbs, armed to the teeth and skilled at building traps to protect himself. Barlett, in turn, will play Frank, Bill’s boyfriend who in games hanged himself after contracting the disease. It is believed that, in the adaptation, Frank will appear alive.

Pedro Pascal (“The Mandalorian”) and Bella Ramsey (“Game of Thrones”) will respectively play the roles of Joel and Ellie in the production. The cast will also include Gabriel Luna, Merle Dandridge, Nico Parker and Jeffrey Pierce.

Kantemir Balagov will be responsible for directing the pilot episode, with Jasmila Žbanić and Ali Abbasi also confirmed to direct other episodes.

The plot takes place twenty years after the destruction of modern civilization. Joel, a surly survivor, is hired to get 14-year-old Ellie out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What started out as a small job quickly turns into a brutal and painful journey as the two have to cross the United States and depend on each other for survival.

The series was created by Craig Mazin (“Chernobyl”), who is also screenwriter and executive producer of the adaptation alongside Neil Druckmann.

For now, production does not yet have a release forecast.
