According to Deadline, the adaptation of the acclaimed musical “Wicked” has finally found a new director.

Jon M. Chu (“Master Trick 2”, “Rich Bugs”) was hired to replace Stephen Daldry (“The Crown“), who left the project overseen by Universal Pictures due to conflicts with the agenda.

Apparently the studio wanted to move forward with proofreading for theaters sooner than Daldry expected, which led him to resign as director.

It’s worth remembering that the feature film was pulled from Universal’s official release schedule in April of this year, after the “Minions” and “Sing” sequences were postponed. The work originally hit theaters late last year, but was eventually replaced by “Cats.”

Based on the eponymous novel by Gregory Maguire, the tale recreates the fantastic world of Oz and chronicles the unlikely friendship of Elphaba, a green-skinned witch who is said to be known as the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda (formerly called Galinda), the future good witch of the North.

In 2003 the book was adapted for the stage. The musical was met with great success with critics and audiences alike, in addition to bringing in Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth in the lead roles. In 2016, the play arrived in Brazil and captured the hearts of audiences.

Winnie Holzman, author of the theatrical reinterpretation, still remains attached to the project.
