“Winter the Dolphin” star has died aged 16

Via Twitter, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) reported that Winter the Dolphin, star of the homonymous films, died aged 16 last night (11).

The female bottlenose dolphin died of a gastrointestinal infection that had been treated for a few weeks.

Over the past three days, Winter has undergone testing before having risky surgery, but her vital signs have started to drop before the procedure.

In a statement, veterinarian Dr Shelly Marquardt, supervisor of the clinic where Winter was being treated, said the following:

“Although our hearts are broken over Winter’s death, we are reassured to know that our team have done everything possible to give him the best chance of survival. We work with marine mammal experts across the country to provide the best care available. The team worked around the clock during this difficult time. I am honored to work alongside such dedicated and talented professionals who have given their all for the winter.

For those who don’t know, the movie ‘Winter the Dolphin’, as well as the 2014 sequel, told the true story of Winter, who was rescued in 2005 off the coast of Florida and ended up being fitted with a prosthetic tail after getting trapped in a crab trap.

Without the tail, Winter’s prognosis was grim, but the experience of a dedicated marine biologist, the skill of a brilliant prosthodontist, and the unwavering dedication of a boy to performing a true miracle were essential to save his life.

Over the years, Winter has become a symbol of courage, perseverance and hope for millions of people – with and without disabilities – who have been touched by her remarkable history of recovery and rehabilitation.

The cast of the films include Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd, Kris Kristofferson, Morgan Freeman and Juliana Harkavy.
